History and significance of the Ore Moutain Candle Arch

The Candle Arch is firmly rooted in the tradition of the Ore Mountains and is used primarily at Christmas time as window decoration. Originally, the   Ore Mountains candle arch was a light source to guide miners' way home during the dark season. Traditionally, the candle arches in the Ore Mountains were illuminated with candles, creating a warm light that the miners considered a symbol of welcome. 

Over time, the Schwibbogen developed into a important part of the Erzgebirge folk artCraftsmen began to elaborately decorate the simple wooden arches and add fine carvings. The motifs became more diverse, reflecting both religious and winter scenes. The Schwibbogen became an expression of traditional craftsmanship and Christmas customs in the Ore Mountains.
